Following a parent’s career path doesn’t usually need the approval of the community. But that’s exactly what was required for two novice council members who will take the oath of office today. Carrie Hummel Snyder will be sworn in at 6:29 p.m. In November, she won the at-large seat vacated by her mother, Kathy Hummel, who chose not to run again after 22 years in office. An hour later in Stow, Brian D’Antonio will take the council-at-large seat held by his father, Dick D’Antonio, for nearly 20 years and more recently by his mother, Janet D’Antonio, who served 16 years.Janet D’Antonio ran for the seat when her husband accepted a position as the city’s assistant service director.Snyder was in first grade when Hummel ran for – and won – a seat on the Cuyahoga Falls school board. Brian D’Antonio was little more than a toddler when his father won his first council election. Both grew up in families that discussed politics at the dinner table. Their parents taught them the importance of giving back to the community, they said.Brian D’Antonio, who works for Berger Transfer and Storage, said he thinks he can make a difference as a member of Stow Council.“It’s no secret to anyone that I still believe in the nonpartisan process and still believe in common sense,” he said. “We still need to develop businesses that bring jobs and people who want to live here.” As government affairs director for the Akron Area Board of Realtors, Snyder would like to focus on neighborhoods and stopping home foreclosures.Hummel said the one piece of advice she gave to her daughter after she won in November is don’t be afraid to ask questions.“She is much more qualified as a new councilperson than I was when I started,” Hummel said. “She has a political science minor, and she works with legislative people all the time.”Dick D’Antonio told his son to meet city employees.“It’s always good to know the people you’re working with so you can go in and say to the finance department, ‘this issue is coming up and I’m not going to agree with you.’ Then after the meeting is over, you go out and have coffee,” he said. While the voters may opt to give Snyder the same long run her mother had – providing she wants it – Brian D’Antonio is limited to eight years as councilman at large. Stow residents voted for term limits for all elected officials in 2010.Both council meetings are open to the public. The Falls council will meet at the Natatorium. The Stow council will meet in council chambers at Stow City Hall.
